Households in Somerset have been warned by experts this winter about a growing global rise in a bacterial disease, a type of pneumonia.

Amid increasing concerns over the global spread of Legionella, Hydrosense, a leading expert in Legionella rapid testing, is reminding the public that, despite the common belief that Legionnaires’ disease is only a summertime issue, it can occur during any season.

Legionnaires’ disease is a potentially fatal lung infection caused by inhaling water droplets contaminated with Legionella bacteria. It can be found in various man-made water systems, including taps, showers, air conditioning units, spa pools, and hot tubs.

Current estimates suggest there are between 4,000 and 6,000 cases of Legionnaires’ disease in the UK each year, with a fatality rate of 7-12%.

Hydrosense experts are emphasising that while summer temperatures create ideal conditions for Legionella bacteria, which thrives in water between 20-45°C, the risk persists year-round.

Greg Rankin, CEO of Hydrosense, commented: “When we think of Legionella, many people tend to associate it with the warmer months. However, the reality is that Legionella is not just a summer problem. Winter can pose just as much of a threat, especially in buildings that have been inactive for long periods, such as schools, universities, office buildings, and even hotel rooms, 32% of which remain unoccupied. Additionally, unpredictable seasonal temperature fluctuations can create perfect conditions for Legionella growth.”

Experts warn that about one in ten people who contract Legionnaires’ disease will die from complications, and seven out of eight survivors will experience long-term health effects, including fatigue, neurological and neuromuscular symptoms, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Greg added: “The rising number and severity of Legionella cases in the UK and Europe are concerning. We urge British consumers to exercise caution, especially when travelling or staying in hotels or spas, particularly in countries with less stringent water safety regulations than the UK. Every Legionella test is an opportunity to detect and prevent the disease, helping to mitigate this growing health risk throughout the year. A simple rapid Legionella testing kit can offer peace of mind and ensure a safer stay.”
